This course applies the latest techniques in aircraft accident investigation and failure analysis to the rapidly expanding world of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Topics include UAV systems, mechanical failures, telemetry analysis, software logic, flight path reconstruction, hardware investigations, and system testing. While the course focuses on the technical aspects of UAV accident investigation, human factors considerations will also be addressed, including Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and automation. Case studies will be evaluated to highlight these subject areas and how UAV accident investigations differ from those of crewed aircraft. Report writing will also be emphasized. The student will have the opportunity to summarize technical information from a UAV accident, formulate conclusions, and develop recommendations to prevent re-occurrence.
