Scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded to persons on active duty in the uniformed military services, veterans, their spouses, or dependents who are currently attending four-year colleges or universities in the United States (not community colleges) and enrolled as full-time students in an eligible degree program.

Active-duty personnel or veterans enrolled as full-time freshmen are eligible to apply. Spouses or dependents must be at least second-year students enrolled full-time as sophomores or juniors at the time of application.

• Chief Petty Officer Scholarship Fund : Children of active duty, retired, or reserve Chief Petty Officers are eligible, whether they are biological, adopted, or stepchildren.
• Hero’s Legacy Scholarship : This scholarship is specifically for children of a parent who has fallen in battle or has a 100% disability compensation rating.

The Mayor’s Scholars Undergraduate Program (formerly the Mayor’s Scholars Undergraduate Fund) provides need-based funding for eligible District of Columbia residents earning their first associate or bachelor’s degree at select area colleges and universities.

The program is a last-dollar award designed to fill the gap between a student’s financial aid package and the cost of attendance. Recipients can receive up to $4,000 per year—up to 4 years for an associate degree and up to 6 years for a bachelor’s degree. Funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and students must reapply each year. Funding is not guaranteed and is available only until funds are exhausted.

• Blue Ribbon Referral: Full tuition for one master’s course is awarded to an alumni or current student enrolled in a master’s degree program who refers a student to any of the university’s degree programs (undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral). The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program awards science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) scholarships to hundreds of incoming college freshmen, current college students, and U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees each year.

The SMART Scholarship is a merit-based opportunity for students pursuing STEM degrees at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. In 2023, SMART expanded eligibility to include incoming college freshmen with no prior college credit, extending the opportunity to high school seniors.

Scholarship Eligibility

• Be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom
• Be 18 years of age or older by January 1, 2027
• Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
• Be currently pursuing, or intend to pursue in Fall 2026, a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in a SMART STEM discipline
